The The - Mrs Mac (thethe.com)

The first new music from Matt Johnson for, well, too long is an instant classic. Abrasive and melodic at the same time, it’s a memoir from his school days and, hopefully, the shape of things to come. A 90p download from the official website, pick up the rare Gun Sluts track for the same price while you’re there.

The Alan Parsons Project - Studio Pass (the-alan-parsons-project.co.uk)

There are a wealth of free downloads at the new Parsons website, set up to promote this year’s reissues. In ‘Studio 1’ you’ll find four MP3 clips including the recently unearthed Vulture Culture off-cut, No Answers Only Questions. In ‘Studio 2’ there are three very rare WMV videos: Don't Answer Me, Games People Play and I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You and also the TV ad for the recent Dutch Collection. And in ‘Studio 3’ you’ll find various MP3 interviews from Alan, Eric Wolfson and contributor Ian Bairnson. A must-have set of downloads for Projectologists, who are already having a bumper year.

Thomas Leer - H is for Home (thomasleer.co.uk)

A free MP3 download from Leer’s new website allows you to get a feel for the fascinating twists and turns his sound and style are taking these days. Check it out then dive into his excellent new album, From Sci Fi To Barfly, which is also available on the site.

Jesus Jones - Doubt (iTunes)

A digital-only re-release from one of 1990s brightest stars of the dance/rock crossover. But not one that proves their music could stand the test of time. While Utah Saints, possibly Carter USM and certainly the KLF can be listened to with just as much awe and fun in 2007, listening back to likes of Jesus Jones and EMF has just too much of a transient feel. Preview the hits from this set on iTunes - Right Here Right Now and International Bright Young Thing – and you’ll see what I mean. The exceptions that prove the rule are Real Real Real and the industrial workout Stripped – both well worth a single-track download.
